Our Philosophy
The doctors and staff of the Opossum Pike Veterinary Clinic believe in serving you and your pet. We take pride in providing high-quality care with a wide range of services. We value the trust you place in us. Our doctors, technicians, and receptionists pursue continuing education programs to continually develop new skills and bring you the latest developments in pet care. We are committed to providing the best service possible.
The Annual Exam
Our veterinarians and staff believe in preventative healthcare for your pet. That is why we strongly encourage every pet owner to have a comprehensive examination of their pets at least once a year. An annual examination of your pet includes a thorough examination of the heart and lungs; the musculoskeletal system; the central nervous system; the eyes, ears, nose and throat; teeth; skin and hair coat; and palpation of the internal organs. The annual examination allows our doctors to detect signs of vital organ failure or diseases, which when diagnosed at an early stage, are often treatable. Many common diseases can develop at any age. Even the old, “never goes outside” pet will benefit from a yearly comprehensive exam.
History
Dr. Harold E. Schaden founded the practice in 1942. He opened the Opossum Pike Veterinary Clinic in 1963. The practice changed from a mixed practice of farm animals and pets to a small animal or pet animal practice in 1977. In 1978, the hospital become a member of the American Animal Hospital Association. This designation is given only to hospitals meeting stringent requirements for physical facilities and professional services offered. Our first satellite office, the Thurmont Veterinary Clinic, was opened in 1982. The Frederick office was renovated and expanded in 1987 to give our patients even better service. In 1999, we opened our second satellite office, Ballenger Creek Veterinary Clinic. What started as a one doctor practice in 1942 has grown into a multi-doctor hospital with modern diagnostic and treatment facilities. We will continue to grow in the future to meet the needs of our patients and their owners.
