Dental disease is the most common problem seen in our pet population today.  More than 85% of all dogs and cats presented to veterinarians are affected by dental problems.  Periodontal disease is caused by the accumulation of bacterial plaque on the teeth and surrounding gums, resulting in gingivitis (the inflammation of the gums).  Left unchecked, gingivitis leads to loss of tissue attachment, and eventually, bone loss around the teeth.  Oral infections can enter into the blood system and travel throughout the body bringing life-threatening infections to the heart, kidneys, and liver.   In addition, an animal with a sore, infected mouth is more reluctant to eat, resulting in weight loss and malnutrition.

Our goal is to delay the progress of peridontal disease and minimize the accumulation of plaque and tartar.  We perform thorough dental exams at your pet’s yearly checkup; provide free dental kits with samples of pet-safe toothpaste, toothbrushes, and dental treats; and have a knowledgeable staff that will be happy to offer tips and techniques regarding at-home dental care and diet alterations which can slow the progress of dental disease in your pet.  Most importantly, we also offer dental prophylaxes (teeth cleanings), a procedure performed under anesthesia where your pet’s teeth are ultrasonically scaled to remove plaque and tartar, and then polished.
